As part of the improvements to visitor facilities at Lincoln Castle an educational and demonstration Heritage Skills Centre is to be provided within the historic setting of the Castle Bailey.

This is to provide training and teaching in traditional construction skills, particularly stone working and carving, and construction and renovating of stained glass windows and allow visitors to view the work being carried out both in progress and as completed displays.

The facilities and educational content are a collaborative venture between Lincolnshire County Council, Lincoln Cathedral and Lincoln College and are partly funded by the European Regional Development Fund.

The project is closely associated with and is using the same management and design teams as the Major Lincoln Castle Revealed project to enhance visitor facilities and experience.

Specialist attention is being given to particular working condition needs in relation to lighting and ventilation for the stained glass workshop, and significant material handling and dust extraction and control systems integral to the storeyard area.

The building is being constructed in accordance with the BREEAM assessment scheme and has been designed to incorporate sustainability features and management practices. The building is to be provided with an underfloor heating system to maximise spatial flexibility, supplied from a highly efficient air-source heat pump.

The building is to be provided with a turf ‘green roof' with a rainwater-reclaimed irrigation system, which acts as a thermal regulator in addition to integrating aesthetically with the surrounding setting.
